Sound can take photos

Photo of a balloon filled up with water, taken the instant it explodes.

We have all seen these type of photographs millions of times before, but they keep on astonishing me. This time I was amazed with the way they used to take the photos. Edward Horsford connected a camera to a sound detection system using an Arduino card.

For those of you that never heard about it, the Arduino system is an attempt to bring the world of electronics closer to people that do not know much about it. Something similar to a ‘Electronics for dummies’ guide … I have got one myself.

The result is the following: when the balloon explodes, the sound detection system shoots the flash at that precise moment, making it possible to take these fantastic photographs.

They told me about this in a technology shop just round the corner, Gizmodo.
